The Check-In – August 2020

The Check-In is a weekly videohang, Mondays at 6pm ET, August 10-31, 2020

Look, it’s been a year. We’re missing our friends, our scenes, our communities, and our work. Let’s get together to check in with each other and talk about what we’re going through as we sort our way through how you hold on to a career, a family, friendships, and a life through a global pandemic. On the one hand, it’s a hang, a social gathering, and other hand it’s a networking session where we can get support and advice from other people in the same sitch. So if you’re feeling stressed about needing to be productive, this totally counts as a productive industry thing. And you can totally put that in a grant or something. See? Productive af.
It’s even funded by the OAC (thanks, pals!).

Interested? Cool – you can find the sign-up links below; it’s free, and it’s four Mondays in August. So don’t make this one of those things you always mean to do and never get around to signing up for – just scroll on down and pick one. Or several! The more the merrier.

The Check-In

You will need to have access to Zoom to participate.

This event is explicitly for non-binary folks, trans folks, and women. It’s not that we don’t like cis men, it’s just that sometimes we need a space apart to allow different conversations to happen, and everyone in the above list is at a systemic disadvantage in the music industry. So if you’re a cis guy, please know it would be kind-of uncool for you to join in on this one.

Additional info:

  • If the group gets too big to manage the conversation fruitfully, we’ll go into smaller breakout groups
  • Unless something comes up, these sessions will be hosted by your pal Candace Shaw, who promises to try and stfu long enough for y’all to have an actual conversation
  • Secret Frequency is committed to anti-racist principles and radical decency. We work to make these spaces good places to be for racialized people, LGBTQ2S+ people, women, non-binary folks, and other people at a systemic disadvantage in the music industry and society in general. We believe that Black Lives Matter, and are learning how to be better allies. We appreciate corrections and advice; you can email candace@secretfrequency.ca
  • We will not be recording these conversations, but we can’t speak to the security of the technology and so we encourage everyone to have some caution if discussing sensitive subjects

Hey artists, while you’re here, why not add yourself to our database of women, trans, and non-binary artists?

Hey, peeps who do other stuff besides performing, we’ve got a database for you, too – please add yourself! (If you are an artist who does other work within the industry, please add yourself to both!)
